A Spoonful of Social Media Makes Email Come Back Around

01.12.11 by Jim O'Gara

Remember email? That stodgy communications tool teenagers proclaimed as “something old people do?” Well, it appears that marketers are poised to give it another shot by further integrating it with their social media activities in 2011. (Take that you teenagers.)

According to a recent StrongMail Marketing Trends Survey, many marketers and business owners plan to invest in and increase both email and social media campaigns in 2011. It seems they are realizing social media can help them generate more leads and are looking for ways to leverage email with social media to further interact with their customers and prospects.

Specifically, the global survey of 925 business leaders found that 71% of businesses plan to integrate email and social media, while 57%plan to increase their 2011 marketing budget for social media activities. Not surprisingly, top candidates for spending include Facebook (35%) and Twitter (21%).

With Facebook on track to launch its new messages feature this year — giving its users an @facebook.com email address and an inbox that unites email and Facebook — the convergence of email and social media seems well on its way to unification.

Who knows, with a shot of social media magic, the dividing line between email and social media could begin to dissolve, giving both young and old a unified means of interacting with your brand.
