It's truly amazing how Apple's App Store has transformed mobile media and marketing. Less than a year old, the App Store is on its way to becoming a billion-dollar marketplace. In fact, applications for the iPhone are increasing at a rate of 38% a month and more than 200 new apps are added each and every day according to Santa Clara-based Mobclix.
So the question for marketers is... how do we get into the game? How can your organization create an iPhone app that increases brand awareness or better yet revenue?
Apps are definitely gaining a lot of traction as branding tools. An example of a successful application branding strategy is the Virtual Zippo Lighter. This iPhone app has been downloaded more than 3 million times since last October, making it one of the most popular and prevalent branded applications in the App Store's history. Believe it or not, this app still averages about 100,000 downloads per week. Another example of leveraging an app as a branding tool is the Audi A4 Driving Challenge. This application has been downloaded more than 3.2 million times since September of last year. These are just two examples that showcase how savvy marketers are using iPhone applications as branding vehicles.
It's incredible how quickly you can engage consumers with your brand through iPhone apps. So we ask... what's your app idea? We encourage you to work with your agency to develop an iPhone app strategy for your target audience. It just may be the most successful marketing initiative you implement in 2009.
