Our POV: Super Bowl ad game winners and losers

02.09.11 by Jim O'Gara

The Packers comeback wasn’t the only thing keeping us on the edge of our seats last Sunday. We kept waiting for some inspiring, $3.5M-worthy ads. Not sure we felt any of them were worth such a chunk of change, but it certainly was enough to send Twitter supernova with flying opinions. And the OnMessage crew had some as well.

An impromptu Monday-morning office email poll showed the VW Passat Darth Vadar ad to be a solid favorite, followed by VW’s racing beetle, Bridgestone’s paying-it-forward Karma Beaver, the NFL sitcom flashback Brand American, as well as Snickers’ Richard Lewis/Rosanne Barr version of the popular “you’re not yourself when you’re hungry” campaign.

A couple of us appreciated Doritos “The Healing Chips” while some of us still can’t stop loving that smart-mouthed eTrade baby (not to be confused in any way with Homeaway.com’s abused test baby).

We were divided on a few spots, with equal love and hate going to Best Buy’s Ozzy vs. Beiber, Motorola’s Moto XOOM and Chrysler’s Eminem Detroit. But an overwhelming number of thumbs down went to Go Daddy, Groupon and Sketchers, with Bud Light’s Wild West and Doritos’ Best for Last finger-sucking grossosity making quite an impression. But hey, we remembered them.

On the other hand, noticeably forgotten by our team (although worth another look) were a bevy of CarMax spots, Bud Light’s Dog Sitter, Kia’s Epic Ride and Audi’s Prison Break.
