VW's New Facebook App

Social networking is a great place to create and build buzz about your product, and we love to hear about standout efforts that generate buzz AND actually deliver value.

One that caught our eye is the new
Facebook app from Volkswagen that analyzes your FB profile and tells you which VW is right for you. Kinda cool in a Magic 8 Ball sort of way, and should appeal to all the Facebookers who are addicted to those Which (TV Series character, season of the year, chemical element, etc.) Are You? quizzes. But there also seems to be a lot of negative buzz out there that's more along the lines of "huh"? As in, what algorithm came up with that result?

So we did a mini experiment around the agency. Our results were pretty favorable, with 80% of the OnMessage folks agreeing with the app's assessment. One eyebrow raise came when the exact same report came back for four different people (our college intern, our Account Director who is a mother of two, and two twenty-something Account Executives). Apparently, we have a lot of "sunny" people around here.

But our overall response was positive. If there is an aura of inaccuracy in the online community, does that dilute the value this app can deliver for VW? Is the idea better than the execution? Will anyone actually lean toward one automobile over another because of it?
