We Need a Mind Eraser

OnMessage spent the last two days at the Ad Age Digital Conference in New York and if Twitter was mentioned once, it was mentioned one thousand times. In all seriousness, Twitter is a great example of a brand/service that has truly exploded through viral and social marketing. Just think about it — have you ever seen a television spot for Twitter?

Make no mistake, the Web, social marketing, and viral campaigns can and will have a significant impact on our brands. That impact can be positive or negative depending on how effectively marketers utilize new media. If there was one thing we took away from the conference, it was this. For the thousands and thousands of attempts made by marketers to leverage digital marketing, only a miniscule number actually succeed.

The lack of success is due to the fact that marketers have not erased traditional marketing methods from their minds and actually immersed themselves in new media.

Simply put... old school thinking, from a campaign strategy perspective, no longer applies. So while digital marketing is here and the opportunities are endless — the challenge will be developing innovative marketing methods that truly leverage what new media has to offer.

So if you feel behind the times when it comes to digital marketing, we recommend diving right in to accelerate your learning curve.
